‘FAITHFUL’ MITT A HIT IN IOWA

DES MOINES, Iowa – Mitt Romney’s major speech about his Mormonism gave renewed faith to Iowans, who came to see the candidate yesterday as he battles Mike Huckabee for first place in Iowa.

“He knocked it out of the park, It was great,” said Virgil Maxwell, a retired businessman and farm manager.

“I don’t worry about a man’s faith if he’s already exhibited what he has done already [by staying married and raising a family].”

Romney, who poured millions into Iowa TV ads only to see Huckabee, a former Baptist minister and Arkansas governor, burst past him in several Iowa polls, refused to discuss whether his speech had assuaged evangelical doubters.

“The speech was not about politics,” he told reporters. “I don’t know how the politics work on it.”
