FANS HURT IN GIANTS’ ESCALATOR MISHAP

Seven people were injured when a crowded escalator malfunctioned at Giants Stadium following last night’s game.

The bottom steps of the escalator from the upper tier to the Gate A exit suddenly fell inward – in effect turning it into a ramp, at about 11:40 p.m., according to Jersey State cops.

“I heard a big bang, like the thing had collapsed,” said Kevin Shaughnessy, of Hartford, Conn., who witnessed the accident.

Several people tumbled off the escalator, which quickly started up again.

Police immediately began pushing to create room to allow those still on the escalator to get off, while several ambulances rushed to the scene Shaughnessy said.

Some of the injured were taken to Hackensack University Medical Center, others were treated at the scene, state police said.

Several suffered foot and leg injuries, including one fracture, officials said. It was not immediately clear if any of the other injuries were serious. One of those taken away by ambulance was a young girl, Shaughnessy said.

The accident took place just after the New England Patriots’ 38-35 win over the Giants.
