ROG HIRES CLINTON LAWYER

Roger Clemens made a huge addition to his legal team yesterday, adding high-powered Washington lawyer Lanny A. Breuer, who is best known for representing former President Clinton during his impeachment hearings.

“We’re delighted to have a lawyer of Lanny’s ability join Roger’s team as we move forward in trying to work constructively with the congressional committee,” Clemens lead lawyer, Rusty Hardin, said in an e-mail.

Breuer was hired to give Clemens an expert in congressional law before he faces the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform on Feb. 13. Breuer is a former assistant district attorney in Manhattan. He currently is a partner in the firm of Covington & Burling.

“It is an honor for me to join Rusty Hardin in representing one of the greatest pitchers and athletes of all time,” Breuer said in an e-mail.

Breuer served as special White House Counsel from 1997 to 1999. He also represented Clinton during the impeachment hearings and trial, and independent counsel investigations.

According to Covington & Burling’s Web site, Washingtonian Magazine recently described Breuer as “one of the cleverest in Washington.”
