OH, SHOOT! ISLANDERS FALL

Earlier in the year, you may have seen Doug Weight or Bill Guerin during a shootout, but fitting the current Islanders’ attitude, there were no veterans involved after the Isles survived OT.

The trio of Frans Nielsen, Kyle Okposo and Josh Bailey didn’t produce any goals – or great chances, for that matter – but it was another example of what the Isles’ mindset is right now.

And as they lost their third straight, 4-3 to the Kings at Nassau Coliseum, the Isles were competitive again.

“We gave up a goal in the third, but we never quit,” Okposo said. “We’re competing every night, which we weren’t always doing earlier in the year.”

Coach Scott Gordon said he had no regrets in his choices for the shootout, and you can expect to see more of all three youngsters should the Isles be in the same position later in the season.

“Now is the opportunity to see those guys,” Gordon said. “They’re going to be the guys of the future. They’re going to be the guys taking the shots. There’s nothing like the present to get some experience.”

Last night, though, it didn’t work out, after Yann Danis, who stopped the Kings’ first two attempts in the shootout, was beaten by a terrific move by Jack Johnson to end the game.

The Isles did manage a point, leaving them five points behind Atlanta for the worst record in the league as they head into tonight’s game against the Devils in Newark.

They had a 3-2 lead heading into the third after an Andy Hilbert goal 9:50 into the second, but Los Angeles answered with a power-play goal by Alexander Frolov at 6:41 of the third.

“We believe we can win,” Danis said. “Now it’s just a matter of doing it.”
