A-ROID AWAITS WORD FROM PROBERS

TAMPA – Alex Rodriguez hasn’t heard from MLB as to when baseball’s investigators are going to talk to him about his steroid use. And the Yankees, who haven’t been informed of a scheduled meeting, don’t know if Rodriguez will miss a spring game in order to talk to MLB.

Yesterday, Rodriguez said there was nothing new on the meeting front, while manager Joe Girardi wasn’t aware of a scenario in which Rodriguez would miss a game.

Two days ago, Rodriguez said he expected the meeting to be held in Tampa. However, MLB’s investigators could catch up with Rodriguez in Jupiter, Fla., next week, since he will be training with the Dominican Republic team for the upcoming WBC. He has to report Monday.

Meanwhile, A-Rod has retained lawyer Jay Reisinger, the second member of his legal team who also worked for Sammy Sosa and Andy Pettitte, according to several published reports.

Reisinger met with Rodriguez in Tampa on Saturday, a person familiar with the meeting told the Associated Press. Rodriguez also has hired James E. Sharp, a lawyer Reisinger brought in to help him represent Sosa before Congress.

Reliever Edwar Ramirez had to kill a bullpen session after six pitches yesterday due to tendinitis in the right shoulder. He is to be examined today by Dr. Allen Miller.

Mark Melancon has pitched in 51 professional games, and only a dozen of them have been above Double-A. But the soon-to-be 24-year-old righty has electric stuff, and he’s somebody to watch.

It would take several injuries for Melancon to make the team. The Yanks are loaded with right-handed relievers vying for spots.

Brian Bruney, Jose Veras, Jonathan Albaladejo and Ramirez are in the mix. And lefty Phil Coke has a chance to join Damaso Marte from that side.
