CRANE PROBER RESIGNS POST

A Buildings Department employee accused of faking an inspection report on the crane that collapsed and killed seven people last month has resigned, a department spokeswoman said yesterday.

Edward Marquette initially was suspended without pay after his arrest on charges of falsely claiming he checked the crane, which toppled on March 15 on East 51st Street. Marquette, 46, could not be reached yesterday.

He was charged with falsifying business records and filing a false instrument that claimed he inspected the crane on March 4, after a neighbor complained it wasn’t properly braced.

At the time of his arrest, Buildings Commissioner Patricia Lancaster said that even if Marquette had inspected the crane on March 4, it was “unlikely” the check would have prevented the disaster.
