TEACHERS IN HOLY WAR

Teachers at 10 Catholic schools in the city and northern suburbs plan to strike today.

A spokesman for the Lay Faculty Association – the smaller of two unions representing teachers in Archdiocese of New York schools – said the strike was triggered by the archdiocese’s refusal to accept a three-year tentative pact. The archdiocese wants a four-year deal.

In the city, teachers will be striking Moore and Farrell high schools on Staten Island; Cathedral HS in Manhattan; and Cardinal Hayes and Cardinal Spellman high schools in The Bronx.

The union had warned previously that it wanted to highlight its grievances while thousands of Catholics attend events coinciding with the pope’s visit.
