KILLING A TRADE DEAL: COLOMBIA BETRAYED

* As a Colombian-born US citizen, I agree with Michael Fumento’s point of view regarding the Colombia FTA (“Unions’ Big Colombia Lie,” PostOpinion, April 28).

I know that John Sweeney’s information is completely wrong.

From visiting Colombia a few times a year, I can see how much President Alvaro Uribe’s government has done for the people and the country since he took over in 2002.

He has accomplished more in six years than other presidents have in the past 20.

I would like to see more positive articles like this in the future.

* Since Uribe took office in August 2002, more trade unionists, over 400, have been killed in Colombia than in the rest of the world combined.

The Uribe government won initial convictions in only 22 cases of murder that have taken place under him, and trade union murders are up sharply in 2008.

Where’s the lie?

* Fumento is correct, but allow me to predict the following: If either Hillary Rodham Clinton or Barack Obama is elected president, he or she will shortly discover that the “human rights” situation in Colombia is so improved (due to his or her efforts) that the trade agreement will be sent to the Senate for ratification. And it will be ratified by a large majority.
