WILLIE MULLS RESTING WRIGHT

SAN DIEGO – David Wright is the only player in the big leagues to play every inning this season, but he might not stay that way much longer.

Willie Randolph said last night he has considered giving the All-Star third baseman a day off after watching Wright appear in each of the club’s first 58 games.

“We’ve been talking about that, but he says he feels great,” Randolph said. “We’ll try to find a spot here and there. If I really feel like he’s struggling, then I’ll give him a day off.”

Wright went into last night’s game against the Padres batting .286 after a recent surge, which is why Randolph is hesitant to sit him.

“If he’s swinging the bat good, you’ve got to be careful with that,” Randolph said, indicating a day off might not come until later in the summer. “You don’t want to throw them out of rhythm.”

Wright has appeared in at least 154 games in each of his first three full seasons in the major leagues, including 160 games last year.

Arizona State first baseman/outfielder Ike Davis, son of former Yankees reliever Ron Davis, was the first of three opening-round picks by the Mets yesterday on the first day of the first-year player draft.

The Mets also took college players with their next two picks in South Carolina shortstop Reese Havens (22nd overall) and UNC-Wilmington right-hander Brad Holt (33rd).

The Mets sent struggling rookie outfielder Nick Evans back to Double-A Binghamton and called up veteran infielder Abraham Nunez from Triple-A New Orleans to replace him. Evans hit just .174 in nine games, and the Mets decided they needed infield depth in Nunez. Randolph said Nunez, a former Phillie who is in his 12th season and was hitting just .133 at New Orleans, is a second baseman and third baseman who can also play shortstop in a pinch. . . . Right fielder Ryan Church was back in the lineup last night after asking for a day off Wednesday in San Francisco because of fatigue after his most recent concussion.
