DAY AT THE PARADE

The first day of All-Star madness was spent at the Grand Hyatt and Yankee Stadium, but today I took it to the streets.

With nothing but my camera and my wits I was dispatched to the red-carpet parade down Sixth Avenue.

On the walk down Sixth before the parade started I spotted the Rockies’ mascot “Dinger” hitting shamelessly on FOX Sports reporter Charissa Thompson. Unfortunately the Post’s photo system does not include shots of Thompson, but one could not blame Dinger for his attempts. Side note: the Giants’ mascot is named Lou Seal.

It started off promising enough – using my media credentials to get onto the red carpet in the middle of everything. That lasted about five minutes when a pushy coordinator informed me that my press pass “didn’t mean anything here.”

And I was escorted back behind the barriers with the rest of the spectators.

Yogi Berra and Whitey Ford were the first Hall of Famers to go by and they stopped right in front of me while preparing for an interview with FOX’s Mark Grace. They were really into the whole thing, though.

“I’m hot,” said Berra fanning himself.

“Can you get me a beer?” Ford asked. He was only half joking.

The pictures can tell the story from there for what turned out to be a rather uneventful day.

As you may be able to tell from the gallery link, this was my first real experience with a camera. I’m not even the guy that takes photos at family gatherings.
