BYE, BYE, BOBBY MURCER

THE ISSUE: The death of Yankee All-Star outfielder Bobby Murcer.

I cannot express my feelings for the loss of this great Yankee (“Beloved Yankee Bobby Murcer Dead at 62,” July 13).

I care about and love all the Yankee greats, but Bobby Murcer was special. He kept the little guys from the tri-state area connected. He is the glue that led to Don Mattingly and Derek Jeter.

I wish his family well. This man touched my life with baseball and, more importantly, how to be a human being.

I hope that Murcer will be remembered as one of the greats, because, in my heart, he was the greatest Yankee of all.

On the day following Murcer’s death, The Post’s front page was largely devoted to actor Heath Ledger and one of Alex Rodriguez’s strippers.

Murcer, a longtime Yankee team member and broadcaster, accomplished fund-raiser and devoted husband of 42 years, only received a small sliver across the bottom of the cover.

If only he were more newsworthy.

Murcer was the bridge that filled the gap from Mickey Mantle to Don Mattingly.

He was an outstanding ballplayer, and he also was the man who eulogized Thurman Munson.

After retiring, fans of all ages got to know Murcer as he called the games for TV, sharing his love and knowledge of the game with us.

His family, friends and fans deserve more than a blurb on the bottom of the page, under “A-Rod Love Nest.”

Maybe people would rather read about the tryst of the week, but Murcer deserves better than that.
