FAA NEAR-MISS DISS GETS PA PLANE MAD

The Port Authority yesterday blasted the FAA for keeping it in the dark about the two near-collisions by airliners in less than a week.

“It is simply unacceptable for the FAA to keep the local airport operator in the dark when the safety of our passengers and the efficiency of our airports are at stake,” Port Authority chairman Anthony Coscia and executive director Chris Ward wrote in a letter to the Federal Aviation Administration.

Top brass at the Port Authority only learned of the two incidents – which both involved planes flying within 1,000 feet of each other – from media accounts.

The Port Authority was also never told that the FAA ordered JFK to change its takeoff and landing procedures at perpendicular runways to avoid similar frightening incidents.

The authority also urged the FAA to step up its efforts to replace the current air-traffic-control system with a satellite-based system known as Next-Gen and to implement it first at the New York region’s three airports.

The FAA had no immediate comment.
