VOTERS OD ON MEDIA ‘O’-VERKILL

WASHINGTON – Obamamania may be filling Barack Obama‘s campaign coffers and making him a global celebrity, but Americans are getting tired of hearing so much about him.

With Election Day still three months away, a new poll finds nearly half of those surveyed say there’s too much press coverage of the presidential candidate, who rode to the front of the Democratic herd as this year’s fresh face.

Yesterday’s poll, conducted by the nonpartisan Pew Research Center, found 48 percent of respondents are tired of hearing about Obama.

Just 26 percent of respondents said the same of his Republican rival, John McCain.

Only 10 percent of respondents said they hunger for more information about Obama, while 38 percent are starved of information about McCain, according to the study.

Among independents – that crucial group of voters both candidates are courting – the results are even more dramatic.

More than half of independents say they’re drowning in Obama info, while more than four in 10 want more McCain news.

Eager to seize on any opening, McCain released another television ad yesterday zinging Obama over his celebrity.

Paris Hilton and Britney Spears were left on the cutting-room floor for this one, which features Obama standing before an adoring crowd in Berlin.

“Is the biggest celebrity in the world ready to help your family?” a female narrator asks. The ad then portrays Obama as a pol who will raise taxes and run jobs out of the country.

Obama spokesman Bill Burton called it “another dishonest attack.”

“It’s time to retire these old policies and bring new energy to America,” he said.

McCain’s previous celebrity ad featured Hilton and Spears, and GOPers say it appeared to resonate with voters.
