DEARLY DULL DEPARTED

‘MY Big Fat Greek Wedding” was able to transcend ethnic boundaries – idiots of all backgrounds loved it.

“My Mexican Shivah” does a mitzvah for the Mexican Jewish community, but that’s about as far as its appeal is likely to go.

After the death of a patriarch, his family gathers for the traditional seven-day mourning period, igniting various unscintillating quarrels over kosher food, an outstanding debt, the appearance of a mariachi band (no music is allowed), a drug bust and the general distaste for the deceased’s girlfriend, a “shameless shiksa.”

Despite wacky klezmer music on the soundtrack, nothing terribly amusing or unpredictable happens as two invisible angels, Aleph and Bet, stand by observing all and weighing the fate of the departed’s soul. I was taking notes also, and mine said: boring movie.

In Spanish, with English subtitles. Running time: 98 minutes. Not rated (nudity, adult situations). At the Quad, 13th Street, between Fifth and Sixth avenues.
