TERM-LIMIT BACKERS CAN’T RULE OUT RERUNS

Two city councilmen leading the charge against a council bill to extend term limits won’t rule out running again if the measure passes.

“You’re asking a hypothetical that I don’t expect to happen. If it were to, I’ll deal with it at the time,” Councilman David Weprin (D-Queens) told The Post yesterday at a press conference, during which he denounced the prospect of giving city officials another four-year term through legislation.

City Hall insiders insist Mayor Bloomberg and Council Speaker Christine Quinn are considering extending term limits for all city officials – to 12 years from eight.

Weprin, who is drafting a bill to insist term limits only be extended by public referendum, will be forced out of office next year and has announced plans to run for city comptroller.

Councilman Bill de Blasio (D-Brooklyn), who is term-limited and plans to run for borough president next year, joined Weprin in denouncing the prospect of overturning the limits by legislation but also refused to rule out running again for his council seat if given the chance.
