Hurricanes affecting our oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico are all the more reason to drill in other parts of America (“Y-Ike!” Sept. 14).

Not only have Americans been blocked from drilling for new sources of oil, but, for 30 years, Congress has made it unprofitable and practically impossible to build new refineries in the United States.
Now, a Category 2 storm like Ike has shown us how stupid our policies have been. We need new refineries in Western states away from coastal areas.
How does it help the poor or middle class by having these whip-sawing gas prices?
Drill here and now.
