EXTRA LUGGAGE FEE TAKE$ OFF

Boarding an airplane has gotten even more expensive.

United Airlines said yesterday it will double its fee for a second checked bag to $50, saying that skyrocketing fuel prices have hurt its bottom line.

United said the one-way fee will apply for all tickets bought starting today for any flight taking off Nov. 10 or later within the US or Canada, the airline said on its Web site.

The fee for the first piece of luggage remains $15 – a surcharge the airline instituted in June.

First-class and business-class fliers are exempt. United said it estimates the fee would apply to about one out of every seven customers.

In March, Delta announced it would slap customers with a $25 fee to check a second bag.
