FLASHBACKS OF A FOOL

DANIEL Craig spends lots of time practicing his moody stare in “Flashbacks of a Fool,” a drama about an LA actor who spends his days in a haze of booze, cocaine and three-ways with hookers.

So what’s his problem? Good question. When he learns that a childhood friend has died, we go to a long flashback (thus the strangely literal title) that takes up half the movie. The Craig character has been nursing a Dark Secret since the summer he spent by the English seaside when he was 15, into glam rock and learning how to be a stud.

The bizarre secret isn’t nearly interesting enough to justify the long buildup to it, and since it amounts to bad luck it doesn’t really reveal anything about the actor, anyway. About all the movie has to recommend it is the David Bowie/Roxy Music songs on the soundtrack and a nicely underplayed performance by the rapper Eve, though she only gets to play the maid.

Running time: 113 minutes. Rated R (nudity, sex, profanity, drug abuse). At the Cinema Village, 22 E. 12th St.
