DRUG BANS LEAVE BULLS SHORT

Thursday proved one of the worst days in Red Bulls history.

Goalkeeper Jon Conway and defender Jeff Parke were suspended 10 games each for performance-enhancing drugs, and a DC United win completely wiped away what had been a five-point playoff cushion a month ago – putting the Bulls on the outside looking in.

Now they’ll play the biggest game of the season tonight against MLS-leading Columbus (7:30 p.m., MSG2), and they’ll do it with two stalwarts having tested positive for androstatriendione (ATD) and suffered MLS’s first performance-enhancing drug bans.

To be clear, ATD isn’t a steroid – it’s a substance few U.S. leagues test for, but which can metabolize in some people into boldenone, a steroid banned by the NFL.

Red Bulls trainer Rick Guter said ATD wasn’t on the label of the supplement the players used, which was bought over the counter at a national vitamin store.

“I think it’s the worst-case scenario. I’m shocked and disappointed,” said coach Juan Carlos Osorio, who’ll give Danny Cepero his first MLS minutes in goal and likely will scrap his favored 3-5-2 for a four-man backline because of Parke’s absence. “They both told me they were notified a month ago. I think it’s disturbing and disappointing. We should’ve had the chance to deal with this internally.”

Player rep John Wolyniec said teams aren’t notified until the appeal process is done and penalties handed out. Those penalties will hurt the Red Bulls, who had a five-point cushion on Sept. 18 but wouldn’t make the playoffs today.
