State Senate Democratic leader Malcolm Smith suggested yesterday that Mayor Bloomberg was a hypocrite for denouncing one-party rule in Albany while pushing through an extension of term limits in the city.
Bloomberg had just finished a press conference in City Hall Park at 12:30 p.m. when Smith showed up with a group of Democratic leaders to promote their candidates in next week’s election.
Bloomberg told reporters he’s supporting Republicans in some state Senate races to prevent every branch of the government in Albany from being ruled by Democrats.
“I’ve always thought that one-party rule is not good for government at any level,” he said. “I just think when you have checks and balances with multiple parties, democracy works better.”
Smith shot back, “I’d say he’s done well with the City Council in the City of New York. He got term limits through, and that was one-party rule.”
