CATCHING UP: GIANTS

It’s hard to find a weakness in this Giants juggernaut, but asked to find one, Carl Banks, former linebacker and now Giants analyst for WFAN, suggested that Big Blue’s secondary is the team’s biggest fault.

Banks suggested that with time to throw, the Giants are susceptible to a good passing game. And the secondary took a hit when CB Corey Webster sat out practice, and CB Kevin Dockery and S James Butler were limited Wednesday.

All three likely will play against the Ravens on Sunday, but would be less than 100 percent. The question is, will Baltimore and rookie QB Joe Flacco be able to expose a rare problem for the defending Super Bowl champions.

“He has played his way through a lot of that,” Coughlin said about Flacco’s lack of experience.

“They have helped him in a lot of ways, the running game, obviously. (Backup) Troy Smith, they use the direct snap as well. They have gadgeted with him in the game. They had the ball thrown back to Flacco from Troy Smith. The direct snap offense is a part of what they do; a lot of unbalanced line, that type of thing.”

The Giants lone loss of the season came when the secondary was victimized by Browns QB Derek Anderson and WR Braylon Edwards in a Monday night, 35-14 loss. Anderson threw for 310 yards and Edwards had 154 yards receiving. Anderson has since been benched, and Flacco has steadily improved as the season has gone on.

“If you follow their team and the progress of the young quarterback Joe Flacco, you see what has developed there,” Coughlin said. “They have averaged 33.5 points a game for the last four games. He has not thrown an interception.”
