MIKE BACKS RAY VS. FEDS

The city needs broader powers to investigate potential terrorists to ensure “planes don’t go into more buildings,” Mayor Bloomberg said yesterday.

Bloomberg took Police Commissioner Ray Kelly’s side in a bitter dispute with the Justice Department over the NYPD’s attempts to secure permission for more electronic surveillance.

“We always have concern about civil liberties,” said the mayor.

“But protecting this country is trying to find a balance between civil liberties and making sure planes don’t go into more buildings or we don’t have bombs on our subways or any of those kinds of terrorist attacks,” Bloomberg said.
