AIRLINE FEATHER VETTING

Pilots and airport personnel should be required by law to report when their planes strike birds, Sen. Chuck Schumer said yesterday.

Citing estimates that only 20 percent of bird strikes are reported to the federal government, Schumer will introduce a bill mandating them.

The number of bird strikes is “unacceptably high,” Schumer said.

Kennedy Airport leads the nation, with 30 reported strikes causing “substantial” damage to airplanes since 2000.

“Miracle on the Hudson” Flight 1549, piloted by US Airways Capt. Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, ditched in the river Jan. 15 because of a bird strike.
