CHILD-CARE COSTS SOAR

WASHINGTON — The cost of child care in New York City has skyrocketed 20 percent over the last four years, according to a study released yesterday by Rep. Anthony Weiner.

The Brooklyn/Queens Democrat’s office found that the average cost of care for tots under age 5 reached $9,382 in 2007. It was $7,848 in 2004.

Weiner is pushing a plan that would double the current $5,000 tax credit for child-care expenses, which, the report found, are taking a big bite out of many family budgets.

He noted that a family of four earning $51,625 a year averages $18,764 in child-care costs — 36 percent of its annual income.
