Siblings survive crash that split car in half

MAHWAH, N.J. — Two siblings survived after their car struck a tree and split in half in northern New Jersey.

Eighteen-year-old Victoria Herndon and her 17-year-old brother, whose name was not released, were on their way to Mahwah High School when the vehicle skidded on an icy road Thursday.

Police say Herndon was trapped inside the vehicle when rescuers arrived. Her brother was out of the vehicle. It’s not clear if he was thrown or was able to escape.

They were taken to a hospital with not life-threatening injuries.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
