Girls basketball roundup: Spellman tops Hill for third straight win

Cardinal Spellman has now won three straight games since a disappointing loss after the holiday break, including back-to-back victories over Staten Island foes.

Troi Melton scored 13 of her 22 points in the first quarter, including the game’s first eight, to get Spellman off to a fast start. The Pilots held off a late push to beat visiting St. Joseph Hill, 63-51, in a CHSAA Staten Island/Bronx crossover Monday afternoon.

Tia Scott scored 11 points, collected six steals and grabbed four rebounds for Spellman (7-3), which beat Notre Dame Academy earlier this week. Amber Griffen had 10 points and eight rebounds, Laura McCaffrey added 11 points, including three critical 3-pointers, and Cari English tallied nine points. Keelan Smith dropped iin 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds for Hill (9-6). Chelsea Mester had 14 points and Kelsey Carey notched six points and 10 rebounds. Spellman led 51-33 after three quarters.

St. Mary’s (LI) 51, St. Francis Prep 41: Meghan Erdman scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds and Katherine Kraus added eight points for St. Francis Prep (9-5) in non-league play. Shannon Flynn led all scorers with 29 points for St. Mary’s (9-3). The Terriers, who trailed by 14 at the half, played their second consecutive game without starting forward Katie Pulido because of a sprained ankle.

South Shore 57, Carver Engineering (Pa.) 48: Taylor Lloyd had 15 points and seven rebounds for South Shore (11-3) in the Ring City “She Got Next” Invitational at Kean University in Union, N.J. Shelby Powell had 13 points and six rebounds and Jasmine Odom added 12 points and four assists. Brittany Hyrnko had 19 points to lead Carver (10-2).

Clark (N.J.) 51, Manhattan Center 46: Aziza Patterson had 23 points and five assists and Kiarah Dunlap had nine points for Manhattan Center (12-6) in the Ring City “She Got Next” Invitational at Kean University in Union, N.J. Clark is 9-2.

Medgar Evers 64, Truman 47: Jasmin Robinson had 19 points and Verdine Warner had nine points for Medgar Evers (15-1) in the Mika/Crown M.L. King Classic at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn. Ashley Castle and Camera Miley, in her return from academic suspension, each had seven points. Nijee Scott led Truman (9-9) with 19 points.

West 50th Street 63, Banneker 46: Jade Venson had 16 points, Shanequa Lassiter had 15 points and Abie Etiuk added 14 for West 50th Street (15-4) in the Mika/Crown M.L. King Classic at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn. Alexcia Barnes had 26 points for Banneker (7-6).

In other games at the Mika/Crown M.L. King Classic, Brooklyn Collegiate beat Bedford Academy and School of the Future defeated Lafayette.
