Bid to charge for GED tests

State Board of Regents members are expected to take steps Monday that would allow New York to start charging students and adults a fee to take the GED for the first time since 1994, state documents show.

The move, which comes in response to shrinking state Education Department coffers, would require legislative approval because of a law that bars charging test takers for the high-school equivalency exams.

While officials have indicated any fee charged would be “reasonable,” some critics say any amount is too much.
