Judge wants fewer defendants in Sept 11 wrongful death trial

A New York judge says he’d like fewer defendants for the June trial of the only wrongful death case remaining from the Sept. 11 attacks.

Federal Judge Alvin Hellerstein invited an airport security company and a Boston airport to submit papers asking to be eliminated as defendants.

The June 13 trial pertains to a lawsuit filed by the family of Mark Bavis, of West Newton, Mass., against United Airlines and several security companies.

Bavis was a scout for the Los Angeles Kings hockey team when he died aboard United Flight 175 at the World Trade Center. A Bavis family lawyer says the airport needs to be a defendant because of questions about how certain weapons got on the plane.

Ninety-four other lawsuits for 95 victims had settled.
