LIRR rider sues railroad over disrupted service during winter storm

CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. — A New York commuter has filed a lawsuit against the Long Island Rail Road for service that was disrupted by severe weather.

Kimon Stathakos filed the suit on Wednesday. He says the railroad should reimburse monthly riders for days when service was disrupted due to snow.

He says he could not use his $334 monthly ticket for four days between late December to early February because severe weather resulted in no or limited service.

Stathakos commutes from Stony Brook to Penn Station 5-days a week.

LIRR railroad declined to comment on the lawsuit. Spokesman Sam Zambuto pointed out that monthly tickets are discounted about 50 percent compared with the cost of daily tickets.

He told Newsday that the railroad only operates when it’s safe to do so.
