Starr report

Several months back I wrote a column item on the April 19 DVD release of “The Ernie Kovacs Collection,” a very comprehensive collection of the late Kovacs’ trailblazing TV work.

Just as impressive as the six-disc DVD release (which just arrived here in the office) is the accompanying 40-page booklet, which includes many great photos and several essays on Kovacs, among them one by Joshua Mills, the son of Ernie’s wife, Edie Adams. He writes on the lengths his mother went to to preserve Kovacs’ video legacy after the star’s untimely death in 1962 (Kovacs was killed in a January 1962 car accident in LA at the age of 42). Mills is also the boxed set’s executive producer. Good stuff.

To mark the DVD’s release, The Paley Center will present “It’s Been Real: The Life and Legacy of Ernie Kovacs” on Tuesday, April 12 (6:30 p.m.) here in New York. It’ll be moderated by Current TV’s Keith Olbermann, with guests including Robert Smigel (creator of “SNL’s” “TV Funhouse” animated bits and Triumph the Insult Comic Dog), Joel Hodgson (“Mystery Science Theater 3000) and “Laugh-In” creator George Schlatter (Schlatter and his wife, Jolene Brand, were personal friends of Kovacs; Jolene performed in several Kovacs TV specials).
