Torre to join Yankees Old Timers at Stadium

TAMPA — Old Timers’ Day at Yankee Stadium will have a new guest this year: former manager Joe Torre.

Torre visited George M. Steinbrenner Field last night, and said the Yankees have invited him to the June 26 event. He said he plans to attend.

Torre was at the game as part of his new role as executive vice president of baseball operations for Major League Baseball. It was the first time Torre was back at this stadium since his meeting here in 2007 with the Yankees owners that resulted in him not accepting their contract offer and ending his tenure as Yankees manager.

PROSPECTS COUNTDOWN

“It’s water under the bridge, I guess,” Torre said. “I never would have changed anything, to be honest with you. You wish at the time I left it could have ended differently, but I don’t know how it could have. I don’t know if either one of us knew how to say goodbye.”

After coming to the tribute to George Steinbrenner last year at Yankee Stadium, Torre said he feels his relationship with the organization is better. Torre met with manager Joe Girardi and general manager Brian Cashman before the game last night. He also said hello to his former players such as Jorge Posada and Derek Jeter, as well as with Russell Martin, whom he managed with the Dodgers.
