Intrigue at school for girls

The British drama “Cracks” is a kitschy soaper set in 1934 at a posh boarding school for girls situated on a remote island.

The girls simply adore their swimming and diving teacher, Miss G, a free spirit played by Bond girl Eva Green. Then an aristocratic, exotic student from Spain (Maria Valverde) arrives on campus.

She sends Miss G’s libido into overdrive while angering the other girls, especially Di (Juno Temple, of “Kaboom”), who until this point had been Miss G’s pet. Revenge follows.

Directed by Jordan Scott, daughter of Ridley (“Blade Runner”) Scott, “Cracks” recalls any number of girls-school dramas, like the much better “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” (1969).

Even so, Scott’s feature debut is beautifully filmed and offers an unexpectedly shocking ending.
