To Die Like a Man

The Portuguese snoozer “To Die Like a Man” might also be called “Boys Who Like Boys Who Want To Be Girls.” But even that snazzier title wouldn’t make it any more watchable.

The film centers around Tonia, an aging drag queen in Portugal whose druggie boyfriend wants him/her to have sex-change surgery. Tonia agrees, but her religious convictions eventually get in the way.

The director, Joao Pedro Rodrigues, has a following among cineasts. “To Die Like a Man” even was Portugal’s official nominee for the foreign-language Oscar. The praise for this static, overlong, stagebound work is a mystery to me.
