Libyan woman who alleged rape says she’s free, medical test proved her story

TRIPOLI, Libya – Eman al Obaidi, the woman who was dragged away from a Tripoli hotel after telling foreign reporters she’d been raped by 15 members of Col. Moamar Ghadafi’s militia, said she was released from three days of questioning only after a doctor’s exam proved she was telling the truth, CNN reported Monday.

In a telephone interview recorded Sunday and to be broadcast Monday night, Obaidi said that after being removed from the hotel, her questioners poured water on her face and threw food at her. She said the interrogations ended only after a doctor examined her to prove the rape charges.

“And when the test came it verified that I was raped and tortured, and then I was freed,” she told CNN’s Anderson Cooper.

She described her spirits and morale as low.

Obaidi also told Cooper statements from a state TV anchor and government officials, who initially called her mentally ill, drunk and a prostitute, had ruined her reputation, CNN said.

She did not give her present location, but did say she had spent time with her family in Tripoli.

However, her father told CNN Monday that he had not spoken with her since last Wednesday and still had no idea where she was.

Obaidi also said she cannot leave the house where she is staying because member of the police or army would pursue her and “mentally torture” her.
