CHSAA baseball roundup: Regis rebounds with extra-inning win vs. Xavier

Two days after a devastating extra-inning loss to Archbishop Stepinac, Regis recorded a huge 1-0 nine-inning win against rival Xavier in Red Hook, Brooklyn Tuesday afternoon.

James Toohey allowed one hit in 6 1/3 innings, striking out eight with three walks while closer Ed Kelly pitched a perfect 2 2/3 innings of relief, striking out two and getting out of a jam with runners at second and third with one out in the seventh inning.

Nick Picht had a pair of hits and Sam Hauser, who had the go-ahead single in the eighth inning against Stepinac, delivered an RBI-single in the top of the ninth for No. 10 Regis (5-6).

Sean Meekins went the distance for Xavier (4-6), allowing one unearned run on five hits, striking out nine with one walk. Danny D’Angelo had the Knights lone hit.

“I’m very happy with the way the guys bounced back after a tough loss against Stepinac,” Regis coach Mike Skrapits said. “Our starting pitching has been carrying us lately, and James was really excellent for us today again. I’m very proud of Ed Kelly who got right back on the hill and got us out of a sticky spot in the seventh and was great the rest of the way. Also a great job by Sam Hauser, a young kid growing up very quickly for us, who came through in the clutch again.”

Salesian 7, Archbishop Stepinac 2: Nick Sedia went 1-for-3 with a two-run single in a five-run sixth inning, John Napalitano went 2-for-3 with an RBI, Nick Mongelli went 2-for-3 with an RBI, Joe Miressi allowed three hits, striking out five and walking one in four innings, while Gabe Cabrales allowed two hits, striking out two with two walks in three innings of relief for Salesian (3-7). No. 10 Stepinac fell to 6-4.

St. Raymond 14, LaSalle 2: After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, St. Raymond (6-5) exploded for 14 unanswered runs as Manny Rivera went 2-for-2 with two walks and two RBIs, Jon Crucey went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Jordanis Nunez went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs. LaSalle fell to 0-7.

All Hallows 3, Cardinal Hayes 2: Jason Reyes took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, but ended up giving up two runs on six hits, striking out eight in a complete-game victory, Stephen Alemas tripled, walked twice and scored a run and James Norwood had a pair of singles and two RBIs to lead No. 6 All Hallows (7-3). Eric Alcantara blasted a solo home run for Cardinal Hayes (5-5) in the seventh inning.
