Steve Serby grades the 2011 NFL Draft picks

If — and it’s always a big if — Tom Coughlin finds lightning in this troubled bottle named Marvin Austin and Rex Ryan can hire Kris Jenkins as club babysitter for Kenrick Ellis, the Giants and Jets are big winners in the NFL Draft.

This draft will be remembered for the boos that rained down on NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, and the chants of “We want football, we want football” filling the air inside Radio City Music Hall.

It is the draft that changed the NFL landscape because it preceded free agency for once instead of the other way around.

Professor Serby grades the NFL Draft:

NFC EAST

GIANTS: CB Prince Amukamara will help cover Cowboys WR Dez Bryant, but they key to this draft is whether Justin Tuck can show red-flagged DT Marvin Austin the Giants Way. No. 3 WR/KR Jerel Jernigan gives Coughlin a return man who can scare someone other than Giants fans. Finally, an offensive right tackle, James Brewer, with left tackle feet! — in the fourth round. In Shaun O’Hara they trust. A

REDSKINS: Mike Shanahan can now send OLB Ryan Kerrigan after QBs Eli Manning, Tony Romo and Michael Vick, opposite Brian Orakpo. WR Leonard Hankerson adds size and huge hands to munchkin receiving corps. One question: Rex Grossman throws to him? RB Roy Helu is perfect one-cut-and-go fit for Shanahan’s system. B

COWBOYS: Owner Jerry Jones bolstered ailing offensive line with T Tyron Smith, who replaces Marc Colombo at RT will eventually be the LT, and G David Arkin. But another sideline-to-sideline ILB, Bruce Carter, with an ACL issue and a RB, Demarco Murray, behind Felix Jones who makes Marion Barber expendable with pressing secondary issues? Rex Ryan guarantees that twin brother Rob will solve secondary and defensive end holes. C

EAGLES: Coach Andy Reid added some nasty to his offensive line with 26-year-old G Danny Watkins, but CB Curtis Marsh is a project. PK Alex Henery means the David Akers Era is over. C

NFL DRAFT: ALL THE PICKS

NFC NORTH

LIONS: Now they really have an Alex Karras mentality in the middle of their defense with DT Nick Fairley joining Ndamukong Suh. Added a complement for Calvin Johnson for Matthew Stafford in WR Titus Young, a DeSean Johnson type, and a Steven Jacksonesque running back in Mikel Leshoure. OL and CB in free agency. A

BEARS: O-line coach Mike Tice finally has a student he can look in the eye in nasty former Packers fan T/G Gabe Carimi, whose job will be to keep QB Jay Cutler upright. Probably cursed their luck when Jints beat them to Austin, so they traded up for DT Stephen Paea, who can bench-press 225 pounds 49 times and will replace Tommie Harris. Mission: Flush QBs into the arms of Julius Peppers. B

PACKERS: Gotta protect QB Aaron Rodgers, so T Derek Sherrod will be bookend for Bryan Bulaga for next decade. WR/KR Randall Cobb is poor man’s Percy Harvin, and RB Alex Green replaces free agent Brandon Jackson. B

VIKINGS: They should have traded down for QB Christian Ponder, who may be Tony Romo Lite, if they’re lucky. Rebounded with sure-handed TE Kyle Rudolph, former hoopster recruited by Butler coach Brad Stevens. DT Christian Ballard offers insurance. D

NFC SOUTH

SAINTS: Sean Payton secured a DE bookend (Cam Jordan) opposite Will Smith and a dependable, every-down running back (Mark Ingram). A

BUCCANEERS: DE Adrian Clayborn gives coach Raheem Morris a much-needed relentless pass rusher, but the key will be whether DE Da’Quan Bowers’ knee allows him to be an elite sackmaster. D

FALCONS: Love big, dynamic WR Julio Jones opposite Roddy White, but GM Thomas Dimitroff surrendered too much. C

PANTHERS: QB Cam Newton better be mentally-tough enough to help rookie head coach Ron Rivera rebuild. DTs Terrell McClain and Sione Fua summoned to help 23rd-rated run defense stop Falcons RB Michael Turner. C

NFC WEST

CARDINALS: Got best corner in draft (Patrick Peterson) and a dynamic running back (Ryan Williams). Can’t blame Ken Whisenhunt for passing on head case QB Ryan Mallett if Mark Bulger or Kevin Kolb (by trade with Philly) winds up the starter. A

RAMS: Coach Steve Spagnuolo is obsessed with hounding the QB — hence freakish, relentless DE Robert Quinn joining Chris Long on the hunt. QB Sam Bradford has some new toys. B

49ERS: DE Aldon Smith could be a dominant pass rusher down the road. Coach Jim Harbaugh landed QB of future behind Alex Smith in Colin Kaepernick. B

SEAHAWKS: You can’t pass on QB Andy Dalton when Matt Hasselbeck may not return. Reached instead for RT James Carpenter as bookend opposite Russell Okung. F

AFC EAST

PATRIOTS: Bill Belichick is the heavyweight champon of the NFL Draft. Everyone else is his sparring partner. He’s Bobby Fischer working the chess board, judging value like no one else. LT Nate Solder is successor to Matt Light and could be a 10-year starter. HC of NEP added another talented CB (Ras-I Dowling) and a pair of young RBs (Shane Vereen, Stevan Ridley). He’ll get a pass rusher in free agency, whenever that may be. A

BI
LLS: DT Marcell Dareus is godsend for worst run defense. CB Aaron Williams helps against Braylon Edwards types. ILB Kelvin Sheppard is a 250-pound thumper who is insurance for free agent Paul Posluszny. RB Johnny White was third-day steal. A

JETS: DL Muhammad Wilkerson is a younger, bigger Shaun Ellis who has double-digit sack ability. NT Kenrick Ellis will be needed to bang heads with Dolphins rookie center Mike Pouncey and beat Rex Ryan to the enchiladas. WR-KR Jeremy Kerley means Brad Smith could be gone. QB Greg McElroy is a winner. B

DOLPHINS: C Mike Pouncey is nasty, cerebral 10-year starter along with stud left tackle Jake Long. RB Daniel Thomas is 230-pound power back, and WR Edmond Gates is speedy deep threat. QB Chad Henne remains the big question mark. B

AFC NORTH

BENGALS: Got their own Calvin Johnson in WR A.J. Green as T.Ocho reality show is history. Andy Dalton is best red-headed quarterback since Sonny Jurgensen. A

RAVENS: Ray Lewis will slap CB Jimmy Smith, their new Chris McAlister, upside the head if he strays aain. Joe Flacco does cartwheels for big, fast target in WR Torrey Smith joining Anquan Boldin. A

BROWNS: Mike Holmgren and Tom Heckert secured a bounty in a trade with the Falcons. DE Jabaal Sheard allegedly hurled a man through the glass door of an art gallery, but now promises to treat QBs rudely. WR Greg Little isn’t Julio Jones, and he was suspended for 2010 with North Carolina teammate Marvin Austin, but he’s a physical 6-foot-2, 220-pound target for QB Colt McCoy. B

STEELERS: DE Cam Heyward is prototypical 3-4 Steelers end as Aaron Smith and Brett Keisel grow long in the tooth. Versatile OT Marcus Gilbert is a 6-foot-6, 330-pound buddy of C Maurkice Pouncey who could step in for fossil Flozell Adams or rehabbing Max Starks and Willie Colon. With Ike Taylor an unrestricted free agent, CB Curtis Brown was considered better cover corner than Texas teammate Aaron Williams. B

AFC SOUTH

TEXANS: Go get Peyton Manning, DE J.J. Watt and OLB Brooks Reed. CB Brandon Harris is only 5-foot-9, but he’ll help weak secondary immediately. A

COLTS: Peyton Manning apparently barged into war room and made the early picks, OTs Anthony Castonzo and Ben Ijalana. DT Drake Nevis is your basic 6-foot-1, 309-pound gap penetrator. A

JAGUARS: Trading up to secure new franchise QB Blaine Gabbert was necessary for the future (David Garrard isn’t the answer) as well as the box office. G-C Will Rackley could start soon. WR-KR Cecil Shorts has 4.59 speed and a 34-inch vertical jump. Did not address glaring pass rush needs. C

TITANS: Reached for QB Jake Locker, but he’s a winner and leader who will make Nashville forget Vince Young. OLB Akeem Ayers provides a pass rush while DT Jurrell Casey is a disruptive body who can penetrate. C

AFC WEST

BRONCOS: OLB Von Miller gives John Fox a Lethal Weapon pass rusher. S Rahim Moore is the heir apparent for Brian Dawkins. OT Orlando Franklin won’t help Orange Crushed stop the run. Why no defensive tackle? C

CHARGERS: Relentless DT Corey Liuget adds nastiness and toughness to confront Darren McFadden, Jamaal Charles and Knowshon Moreno. WR Vincent Brown is a local kid with sure hands who answered questions about his speed. OLB Jonas Mouton has maturity concerns and only 4.87 speed. C

CHIEFS: WR Jonathan Baldwin will either be a boost for Matt Cassel and Dwayne Bowe or a major headache for Todd Haley and GM Scott Pioli. Joe Namath fan Ricky Stanzi to battle Brodie Croyle for backup QB job.C

RAIDERS: No first-round pick. C Stefen Wisniewski is a meanie, but he can’t play quarterback. CB DeMarcus Van Dyke (aka DVD) runs the 40 in 4.29 and RB-KR Taiwan Jones has 4.28 speed. Just burn, baby, burn. C

NFL OWNERS: If they have their way, everyone becomes Mr. Irrelevant — especially the fans. F
