Girl soccer playoff roundup: Copulsky’s overtime PK sends Riverdale to NYSAISAA final

Rachel Copulsky’s left leg won another game for Riverdale.

The senior midfielder scored on a penalty kick to the lower left hand corner with four minutes left in the second overtime to give top-seed and host Riverdale a thrilling 1-0 win over No. 5 Fieldston in the NYSAISAA girls soccer semifinals Friday. The PK was awarded after a Fieldston defender got her hand on an Isabella Bertagna cross in the box.

“All the players immediately raised their hands around the area,” Riverdale coach Orlando Osorio said. “It was very clear.”

Copulsky had a goal disallowedin the first extra session by an offsides call. The Falcons (16-0-2), who are unbeaten in their last 37 games, will defend their NYSAISAA title against No. 2 Rye Country Day, which beat Dalton 3-0 in other semifinal, 5 p.m. Sunday at Manhattanville.

Fieldston, which tied Riverdale 2-2 in their last meeting, ends the year 7-5-2.

“It was just an incredible round of anxiety with the girls today,” Osorio said. “The game was so tight. I didn’t know which way it would go.”

PSAL CLASS A

Bronx Science 6, Lab Museum 0: Isabella Pecorari scored twice and dished out an assist and Gianna Finz found the back of the net twice for No. 1 Bronx Science (13-0-0) in the second round of the PSAL Class A playoffs. Elizabeth Schaeffer and Lucy Evert each added goals and Nadine Penkovsky chipped in an assist. The Wolverines host No. 8 Long Island City in the quarterfinals 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Lehman. No. 16 Lab Museum finished is 9-6-0.

Beacon 9, Riverdale/Kingsbridge 0: Tyler Sloan recorded a hat trick for No. 2 Beacon (14-0-0) in the second round of the PSAL Class A playoffs. Desiree Nestor scored twice and Emily Mendes had two goals and an assist. Ella Kim and Jennifer Angione each chipped in a goal and two helpers. The Blue Demons advance to face No. 7 Tottenville in a rematch of last year’s final won by Beacon, 2 p.m. Tuesday in the quarterfinals. No. 18 RKA is 11-3-0.

McKee/Staten Island Tech 3, Forest Hill 0: Jackie Bruno scored all three goals for No. 3 MSIT (11-0-2) in the PSAL Class A second round. Lindsey Boody and Nicole Brennan each added assist. The Seagulls welcome No. 6 Francis Lewis 2 p.m. Tuesday in the quarterfinals. No. 19 Forest Hills ends the year 8-4-2.

Bayside 7, Leon Goldstein 0: D.J. Glazer scored four goals and Vanessa Giraldo scored twice and dished out an assist for No. 4 Bayside (11-0-2) in the second round of the PSAL Class A playoffs. Hediye Karibay added a goal, Christina Psomopoulos had two assists and Alyssa Ortega chipped in one. The Commodores host No. 5 LaGuardia 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in the quarterfinals. No. 13 Leon Goldstein is 9-4-1.

LaGuardia 5, Fort Hamilton 0: Erika Yamazaki found the back of the net twice and Natalie Turner Wyatt tallied a goal and three assists for No. LaGuardia (12-2-0) in the second round of the PSAL Class A postseason. Gabriele Davis and Isabella Creatura each added goals and Hannah Hemmerly and Margo Carlovich both chipped in assists. The Athletics visits No. 4 Bayside 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in the quarterfinals. No. 12 Fort Hamilton ends the season 10-2-1.

Tottenville 4, Cardozo 0: Nicole Tantillo scored twice and Gabriella Amoroso had a goal and an assist for No. 7 Tottenville (10-1-3) in the PSAL Class A second round. Kaitlin Russo added a goal and Erin Connelly had an assist. The Staten Island power travels to play No. 2 Beacon in a rematch of last year’s final 2 p.m. Tuesday in the quarterfinals. The No. 23 Judges finished 7-6-1.

PSAL CLASS B

Telecommunication 5, Environmental Studies 0: Sayla Flores tallied four goals for No. 1 Telecommunications (13-1-0) in the PSAL Class B quarterfinals. Jillian Protin had a goal and Carol Flores and Linda Tiu both chipped in assists. Telecom advances to face No. 5 Baruch in the semifinals 10 a.m. on Nov. 11 at Lincoln. No. 9 Environmental Studies is 7-7.

James Madison 3, Beach Channel 0: Katherine Chirinos had a goal and an assist and Samantha O’Brien and Ana Beriashvili each added a score for No. 2 James Madison in quarterfinals of the PSAL Class B playoffs. Jasmine Fermin and Mercedes Diaz both chipped in assists. The Knights (11-2-0) face No. 6 Newcomers in the semifinals Nov. 11 at 12 p.m. at Lincoln. No. 7 Beach Channel finishes 9-2-3.

Baruch 3, Frank Sinatra 2: Patricia Curran scored twice and Alina Van Ryzin had a goal and an assist for No. 5 Baruch (12-2-0) for an overtime victory in the PSAL Class B quarterfinals. Elida Almaraz added an assist and Hera Andre Bergmann made 10 saves. The Blue Devils take on No. 1 Telecom in the semifinals 10 a.m. Nov. 11 at Lincoln. No. 4 Sinatra is 10-1-1.
