‘Dexter’ back for more gore

TV’s favorite serial killer will be around for a while.

Showtime’s “Dexter,” starring Michael C. Hall, has been renewed for a seventh and eighth season (12 episodes apiece), the network announced yesterday.

The news comes on the heels of Showtime inking a deal with Hall to return to the series.

Production on the seventh season will begin soon in LA.

Season-to-date, “Dexter” is averaging 5.1 million viewers, a figure that takes into account On Demand, repeats and DVR viewership. Still, it’s the show’s best season viewership numbers ever.

“ ‘Dexter’s’ enormous success is a real tribute to the great achievements of its cast, producers, and the powerhouse performance of Michael C. Hall,” Showtime president David Nevins said in a statement.

“The series is bigger than it’s ever been in its sixth season, both in terms of audience and its impact on the cultural landscape.”

In the show, Hall plays Dexter Morgan, a blood splatter specialist for the Miami police department who leads a double life as a serial killer (murdering only those people who are killers themselves).

Hall, who previously starred on HBO’s “Six Feet Under,” has earned three consecutive Emmy nominations for his role, but has yet to walk off with the coveted statuette.

Lauren Velez, David Zayas, Jennifer Carpenter (Hall’s ex-wife) and Desmond Harrington also star on the critically acclaimed show.
