Suspect nabbed in E. Village rape bid

The man who tried to rape an East Village woman after following her into her apartment building was arrested yesterday, cops said.

“I’m thrilled,” the woman, Jane Callanan, 27, told The Post last night. “I can sleep soundly now.”

Imre Meszesan, 35, was charged with attempted rape and burglary after Callanan picked him out a lineup. “I recognized him instantly,” she said.

“I’m very thankful for all the good work that the sexual victim’s unit did.”

Meszesan allegedly tried to rape Callanan — who works for a Manhattan fashion company — after standing outside her apartment early Sunday and then following her inside.

Meszesan, who was caught on crystal-clear surveillance footage, managed to open the building’s first door and quickly pounced on Callanan, cops said.

The victim said that the man came up from behind her and lifted up her skirt, before she turned and fought him off, causing him to run off.
