South Shore’s Samuel favors Iowa State

Terrence Samuel doesn’t have a timetable to pick a college. The South Shore point guard does have a favorite, though.

“I like Iowa State a lot,” the 6-foot-4 guard said. “I like their style of play. They play fast, they have a lot of shooters. They like to run.”

The talented junior, who is temporarily shelved with a strained groin, saw his recruitment shoot up after a big summer with New Heights. He picked up several offers, from Rutgers, Villanova, Louisville, Pittsburgh, Oregon State, Cincinnati and Arizona, but said as of now the schools in the picture in addition to Iowa State are Penn State, Oklahoma State, Pittsburgh, West Virginia and Temple. All have offered.

Led by assistant coach Matt Abdelmassih, Iowa State has already made a dent in the area recently, nabbing Half Hollows Hills West point guard Tavon Sledge and St. Raymond senior Kerwin Okoro. The Cyclones were at almost every one of Samuel’s AAU games this summer and Abdelmassih, a St. John’s alum, has developed a close relationship with him.

“They’re good guys,” Samuel said of the Iowa State staff. “They always stay in contact with me.”

He’s visited Penn State, Temple and Iowa State and plans to see VCU at some point during the year. Samuel is unsure if he will decide before the year is up.

“I’m not sure yet,” said Samuel, who averaged 10 points, four rebounds and four assists last year in leading the Vikings to the PSAL Class AA quarterfinals. “I’m trying to take it one step at a time.”

South Shore coach Mike Beckles is looking for leadership out of Samuel and would like to see him improve his perimeter shot and perimeter defense.

“If he works a lot harder, he’ll improve and his recruitment will improve,” the coach said.
