World surfing tour to return to Long Island next year

The world’s best surfers are coming back to Long Island next year.

The Association of Surfing Professionals released its 2012 schedule and it lists the Quiksilver Pro New York on Long Island as one of 11 world title contests.

The schedule doesn’t name Long Beach as the specific location for the contest. The town hosted the Quiksilver Pro New York this year. An ASP spokesman said he believed the event would be held at the same location as this year’s.

But Quiksilver, which has a contract with the ASP to hold an East Coast event, hasn’t said whether it’s returning to Long Beach. A company spokesman couldn’t be reached.

Thousands of spectators turned out in September for the first Quiksilver Pro New York as Hurricane Katia far offshore served up overhead barrels.

But Long Beach officials canceled a major portion of the event — a festival that was to include numerous concerts — after Tropical Storm Irene battered the town. The cancelation left many wondering whether Quiksilver would return to Long Beach.

Quiksilver officials have publicly said they were pleased with the turnout in Long Beach this year but have stopped short of saying they would return.
