Paterno cancer shocker

Fired Penn State coaching legend Joe Paterno is in treatment for lung cancer, his son said yesterday.

“His doctors are optimistic he will make a full recovery,” Scott Paterno said in a brief statement.

Scott said his 84-year-old dad’s stunning diagnosis was made during a follow-up visit last weekend for a bronchial illness.

Paterno (below) was seen Wednesday visiting the Mount Nittany Medical Center, where he was treated and released, the Citizens Voice of Wilkes-Barre reported.

The latest bombshell to rock Penn State followed the heinous allegations against Paterno’s former longtime defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky, who is charged with sexually abusing eight boys over 15 years.

Although Paterno isn’t facing charges in the case, he was widely criticized for not having done more to stop the abuse.

Trustees booted the beloved JoePa on Nov. 9, days after Sandusky’s arrest.

Paterno had prided himself and his vaunted football program on its slogan, “Success with Honor,” and the Hall of Famer’s 409 career victories are a Division I record.
