Andrea Peyser’s mother dies

Ruth Peyser, mother of Post columnist Andrea Peyser, died Saturday at 87.

Born Sophie Staendig in Vienna, Austria, she emigrated to then-British Palestine in 1939 and served in the Israeli army, where she met her husband, mathematician Dr. Gideon Peyser. They settled in The Bronx in the 1950s, then in Queens. Dr. Peyser died in 1979.

An older daughter, Rhona, died in 2002.

In addition to Andrea, survivors include son-in-law Mark Phillips and granddaughter Eliza Phillips.
