Protests scuttle ‘Muslim’ ads

Lowe’s Home Improvement has pulled its commercials from a reality show about American Muslims following protests from an evangelical Christian group.

The giant chain stopped advertising on TLC’s “All-American Muslim” after the Florida Family Association complained the program was “propaganda that riskily hides the Islamic agenda’s clear and present danger to American liberties and traditional values.”

The show chronicles the lives of five families from Dearborn, Mich.

A California state senator said he might call for a boycott of Loew’s.

Calling its decision “un-American” and “naked religious bigotry,” Sen. Ted Lieu said yesterday that he would also consider legislative action if Lowe’s doesn’t apologize to Muslims and reinstate its ads.

Lieu said he’d look into whether the company violated any California laws.

Loew’s yesterday apologized for having “managed to make some people very unhappy,” adding, “Individuals and groups have strong political and societal views on this topic, and this program became a lightning rod.’’

It did not say whether it would restore its ads.

Suehaila Amen, whose family is featured on the show, told The Detroit News, “I’m saddened that any place of business would succumb to bigots and people trying to perpetuate their negative views on an entire community.
