Step up to the plate, NY

New Yorkers touched by the tragic slaying of NYPD Officer Peter Figoski continued to dig deep in support of his grieving daughters.

Donations to the Peter Figoski Scholarship Fund reached $513,767 yesterday, showing there’s no limit to the compassion of Big Apple residents for a fallen hero.

Figoski, 47, was trying to break up a Brooklyn robbery when he was gunned down Monday, allegedly by a violent thug who should have been in jail on an out-of-state warrant.

The courageous, decorated officer left behind four daughters, Christine, 20, a SUNY Oneonta undergrad; Caitlyn, 18, a SUNY Plattsburgh student; Caroline, 16, and Corrine, 14, who are both high school students in West Babylon, LI.

The scholarship fund to support Figoski’s kids was launched by The Post and the New York City Police Foundation.

After learning about the tragedy, Mets COO Jeff Wilpon called Commissioner Ray Kelly and PBA head Pat Lynch to offer his condolences — and gave a donation to the scholarship fund.

“It’s at times like this that New Yorkers rally around their neighbors,” Wilpon said yesterday.

Donations to the Peter Figoski Scholarship Fund are tax deductible and can be made by mailing checks to the charity’s addresses.

Credit and debit-card donations can be made at www.nycpolicefoundation.org

Both mail and online donations should be clearly marked for the Peter Figoski Scholarship Fund.

New Yorkers from all walks of life have rallied behind Figoski’s family.

Hamptons developer Joe Farrell read about the NYPD hero in The Post and didn’t think twice to act.

“I ripped out the article, went back to my office and donated,” he said. “Having a daughter and knowing what a father means to a daughter, and the thought of four daughters losing their wonderful father broke my heart.”

Even local businesses are contributing.

The new Fairfield Inn & Suites in Brooklyn pledged to donate $5 from every room booked in January — “in hopes that Officer Figoski’s four daughters will have the future he would have wanted for them,” the company said.
