Tebow sets Twitter record with OT win

Think you were the only one talking about Tim Tebow and the Broncos’ overtime win yesterday? Think again.

Following Tebow’s game-winning 80-yard touchdown pass to Demaryius Thomas in overtime against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Twitter users set a sports record by tweeting 9,420 times per second about the Broncos QB’s heroics.

No other event this year even came close to the volume of tweets Tebow and the Broncos did. The Royal Wedding (3,966), Bin Laden raid (5,106) & Steve Jobs’ death (6,049) were some of the events that Tebow topped last night, according to CNBC.com’s Darren Rovell.

Tebow has been at the center of controversy and in the media spotlight all season. The former Heisman Trophy winner has been scrutinized for his openness about his religious beliefs and even inspired the Tebow-ing Internet phenomenon.

Tebow, a 2010 first-round draft pick, took over for Kyle Orton in Week 7 and led the Broncos to the AFC West title. Tebow had one of the top-selling jerseys in the NFL this season.

The Broncos and Tebow will head to Foxborough, Mass., to face the New England Patriots in the AFC Divisional playoffs Sunday.

The Patriots defeated Tebow’s Broncos 41-23 in Week 15.
