Faulting the First Lady: angry or misunderstood?

The Issue: Michelle Obama’s concern over how she is portrayed in Jodi Kantor’s book “The Obamas.”

How interesting that Michelle Obama should lament that people have tried to paint her as “some angry black woman” (“Mad as Hell Michelle,” Jan. 12).

Anyone who’s taken the trouble to download her thesis, “Princeton-Educated Blacks and the Black Community,” would support that she was an angry black woman back then.

Then there’s the controversy of a news camera capturing her at the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, allegedly asking her husband, “All this for a flag?”

Many Americans have read Michelle’s thesis, whole or in part, and the CNN moment went viral.

Considering Nancy Reagan’s insensitive overspending in the White House and Laura Bush’s disagreements with her husband’s politics, here is a diversion.

Michelle has been responsibly active in advocating for veteran families and trying to decrease obesity in children.

Out of respect for the White House and the first lady, The Post and other conservative media outlets would do well to leave Michelle alone and let her be gracious in her advocacy.

Not all black women are angry.

Michelle received an Ivy League education, has two beautiful daughters who will have numerous opportunities in the future, has held profitable jobs and, even before moving into the White House, was among those with the highest standard of living in the most prosperous, tolerant nation on Earth.

Yet Michelle said she was not proud of her nation until her husband was cheered on as he ran for president.

I can’t know what is in her heart and soul, but, based on her actions and words, Michelle has been “an angry black woman” for quite some time.
