Boys basketball roundup: Calhoun, CK edge out Miller Grove (Ga.)

Christ the King has had its struggles against national-level opponents, getting routed by Neumann Goretti (Pa.), Chester (Pa.) and Westbury Christian (Texas) in recent weeks.

That monkey is off its back now.

UConn-bound star Omar Calhoun poured in 34 points and had 11 rebounds to lead Christ the King to an impressive, 79-76 win over Miller Grove (Ga.) in the Bass Pro Shops Tournament of Champions third-place game Saturday in Springfield, Mo. Jordan Fuchs had 19 points and 10 rebounds and Jon Severe added 10 points for CK (9-4).

The Royals also held Miller Grove big man Tony Parker to just 19 points. The 6-foot-8, 255-pound behemoth is the No. 19 player in the senior class according to Scout.com and has offers from Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, Memphis, Ohio State and UCLA. Tony Evans and Brandon Morris each had 14 points and Justin Colvin added 13 points for Miller Grove.

A Severe jumper put the Royals ahead, 77-76, with 17 seconds left and Isaiah Lewis made two clutch free throws with six seconds left to extend the lead.

Liverpool (N.Y.) 58, Nazareth 56: Samson Usilo had 28 points and Mike Megafu had 17 points to lead Naz (8-6) at the Juggler Classic in Utica.

Construction 56, Long Island City 44: Harry Eromoselle had 16 points and 11 rebounds, Joe Sewsankar added 15 points and Kareem Stowe had eight points and nine rebounds for Construction (13-5) in a meeting of Queens Class A division leaders. LIC is now 16-2.

Lehman 74, Fannie Lou Hamer 66: Corey Morgan Jr. had 12 points and 15 rebounds and Jimeek Conyers and Isaih Thomas had 13 points apiece for Fannie Lou Hamer (14-3) in defeat.

CHSAA CLASS AA

Holy Cross 64, Mount St. Michael 59: Will Davis had 16 points and Anthony Libroia had 11 points and 10 assists to lead Holy Cross (13-2, 2-2 ‘AA’). Mairega Clarke had 10 points and 13 rebounds and Terrell Williams and Eddie Roscigno also had 10 points apiece. Marquise Moore reaggravated his toe injury in the first quarter and coach Paul Gilvary sat him the rest of the way. It was precautionary, the coach said, but there’s no timetable for his return. Mount is 11-3, 3-2.

St. Peter’s 43, All Hallows 36: Andrew Cannon scored 15 points and Patrick Fennell added eight points for St. Peter’s (11-4, 3-1 ‘AA’). Davon Robinson had 17 points and Jon Brens had 10 points for All Hallows (7-6, 4-4).

CHSAA CLASS A

Iona Prep 64, LaSalle 54: Luke Wooters had 20 points, Isiah Ice had 12 points and Tim McCarthy added 10 for Iona (11-2, 5-1 ‘AA’). Shammgod Wells had 18 points and Chris Polanco had 15 points for LaSalle (6-8, 5-4).

PSAL CLASS A

Roosevelt 77, Smith 46: Derrick Madden scored 19 points, Robert Pace had 18 points, six rebounds and six assists, Milton Myers had 14 points, seven rebounds and six assists and Brian Medrano notched 10 points and 10 rebounds for Roosevelt (8-5) in Bronx A West. Smith is 3-10 in Bronx A East.

PSAL CLASS B

Pathways 63, August Martin 51: Shaleik Ulysse had 13 points and 12 rebounds, Sam Annorh Jr. added 13 points and five assists, Jamel Holmes had 11 points and Romario Fletches had seven points, four blocks and 15 rebounds for Pathways (11-4, 8-1), which leads Renaissance by a game atop Queens B East. Jameik Riviere scored 16 points for August Martin (7-3).

Bard 49, Marta Valle 26: Jonathan Correa had 16 points and Teddy Uzamere also had 16 points and 13 rebounds for Bard (3-4) in Manhattan B-2. Marta Valle is 3-5.
