Boys basketball roundup: Bedford knocks off Campus Magnet

Bedford Academy picked up its biggest win of the year before its most important one.

The PSAL Class A Panthers upset Queens AA contender Campus Magnet, 75-63, Sunday afternoon in the Dr. Frank N. Mickens Classic at Boys & Girls.

Darien Best scored 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, Sean Snagg had 18 points, Darren Thomas followed with 14 points and eight assists and Ellis Everett chipped in six points and 10 rebounds for the Panthers.

“This makes up for the ‘A’ losses and hopefully prepares us for tomorrow,” said Bedford coach Rob Phelps, referring to Monday’s matchup with PSAL Class A front-runner Brooklyn Collegiate.

Nohah Vickers had 20 points for Campus Magnet (12-5), which trailed 21-10 after the first quarter. Bedford (13-3) has now won three straight after a shocking league loss to Prospect Heights.

“We’re up and down. Today we played really well,” Phelps said. “It’s a big win. Any time an ‘A’ team can beat a ‘AA’ team, it’s a good win.”

Xaverian 72, Transit Tech 57: Brian Bernardi scored 20 points, Dillon Burns had 12 and Shakeel Kemp and George Lambert had 11 apiece for Xaverian (9-4), which snapped a three-game losing streak. The Clippers host Mount St. Michael Tuesday at 4 p.m. Richard Williams scored 17 points for Transit Tech (8-11) and Fabian MacDonald added 14. The Express visits Robeson Tuesday at 5 p.m.

rchbishop Molloy 76, St. Joseph by the Sea 48: George Davis had 14 points and Christian Giles and Brian Kruger each had 13 points for Molloy (10-6), which has won three straight. Kruger scored 10 points in the first 2:10 of the second quarter on three 3-pointers and a free throw. The Stanners were without legendary coach Jack Curran (pneumonia) for the second straight game.

Justin Henderson led Sea (5-10) with 20 points.

Nazareth 51, West Genesee (N.Y.) 49: Mike Megafu scored 20 points and Samson Usilo had 18 points, good enough for a spot on the all-tournament team at the Juggler Classic, for Nazareth (9-6) in Utica.

CHSAA CLASS AA

Archbishop Stepinac 56, Monsignor Farrell 53: Tyler Iacuone had 18 points, Josh James had 12 points and Devino McRae added 11 points for Stepinac (5-7, 2-6 ‘AA’). Connor Nicholson had 18 points for Farrell (6-10).
