MTA releases railroad rider bill of rights

You don’t have to stand for not getting a seat on the Long Island Railroad or Metro-North, according to MTA’s new pledge to customers.

The transit agency this morning released a new bill of rights for railroad riders, guaranteeing everything from a “clean environment” to “courteous employees.”

It also promises that “best efforts” will be made to provide seats for every rider.

The pledge will be posted on the MTA’s website.

Officials said they came up with the pledge after talking to riders and railroad advocacy groups.

The pledge also includes the elimination of the $10 processing fee on refunds for one-way or round trip railroad tickets when a service suspension is declared on the MTA’s website.

There are slight differences between the LIRR and Metro-North’s pledges.

Metro-North’s pledge requires conductors and assistant conductors to wear name badges. LIRR’s does not.

It will be officially ratified on Wednesday by the MTA board.
